Social Media

The two social media accounts that I have are Facebook and reddit. For me, I use Facebook for staying connected with friends and family, and for more local information. Community happenings pages exist for almost any place you can think of, and they can be a great source for finding out why you heard sirens last night, why certain roads are closed, what public events are happening, and local news articles. There can be drawbacks to these groups, as people tend to be awfully brave and opinionated when hiding behind their keyboard. Although I will admit, sometimes it can be fun to make some popcorn and spend an evening reading all of the drama from the day. Now when it comes to reddit I consider it a more national or even global news source. Some of the subreddits I follow are r/politics, r/worldnews, and for sports r/nfl and r/mma. The thing that I like about reddit is the organization of the information. I think it makes it really easy to check facts and have discussions with other peo

The Information You Consume

Fake news. We've all heard the term. We've all used the term too, whether it was in jest or otherwise. So why is it important? What's the big deal if people aren't getting all the correct information? It wont hurt anyone, right? Wrong. There's arguably nothing more important than having accurate information. Without correct facts, change will never happen. If people don't know what horrors are going on in the world, they won't be able to make any changes. If someone doesn't know that there's a problem, they can't try and fix it. It's incredibly important that everyone confirms the news that they hear, and to be honest, it isn't all that difficult to do. The first step, read more than just the headline. Headlines can be incredibly misleading, even if the facts in the actually article are accurate. Here's the scenario: Martha is cruising Facebook, sharing minion memes and saving recipes for later (even though she's never going to

About Me

Hey everyone! I'm in my second year at Linn Benton and my first year in the Degree Partnership program at Oregon State. My major is English, but considering I've changed it four time I wouldn't bet on it staying the same for the next two years. The reason that I chose Linn Benton is probably similar to most students: the almighty dollar. The career that I would most like to have would be an editor, but if you asked me three years ago I would have had a very different answer. Before starting college I was a pretty serious martial artist, and had goals of competing professionally. Unfortunately, an injury put a stop to that path and here I am! Because I can no longer do martial arts I've had to find new hobbies to fill my time. I enjoy writing, hanging out with friends, and watching Netflix for hours on end. Yes Netflix, I'm still watching, you can stop asking. The thing I'm most interested in about the media is how it can affect the way people think and behave.
